Installing a client machine to your ScanIt Parts system can be done in a matter of minutes by following these easy steps.
In the following steps, when the "Server" is referenced, this is the computer that has the Server version of ScanIt Parts installed. It can be easily recognized because it is the only computer that will have the Interact program on it. You can also tell by opening the ScanIt Parts program, clicking on Settings, and looking at the heading of the window that pops up. If it says "Server Settings", you are on the Server computer. If it says "Client Settings", you are on a client machine. Once you have determined which computer is your server, you can then start setting up your client machines.
On the Server
- Click the Start button on your task bar
- Click on Run
- Type 'cmd' in the space available and hit OK
- At the command prompt, type 'ipconfig /all' and hit ENTER
- Write down the IP address of that computer (this is the <server_ip_address> referenced below)
- Go to the Program Files folder and right-click on the ScanIt Parts folder
- Go to Properties and click on the Sharing tab
- Enable sharing and change the shared name to: parts
On the Client
- Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Map a Network Drive'
- Map the drive to: \\<server_ip_address>\parts
- When the map is finished, it should open the networked folder. If it does not, open it manually by going to 'My Computer' and opening it manually
- In the ScanIt Parts folder, find the Client folder and open it
- In the Client folder, double-click on the file 'Setup ScanIt Parts Client' to start the install
- Make sure the checkbox to use a static IP is marked when prompted
- When asked for a path, type: \\<server_ip_address>\parts\data
- Run the program and make sure you can see the data by running Browse
When the network is modified, IP addresses and mapped network drives are often changed and/or broken. This causes problems when programs try to access those other resources. If you ever receive a program error when trying to open ScanIt Parts on a client computer that states "Invalid path or file name", you can either hit cancel and try again, or hit ignore and let our software find the correct path or file name.
If you hit ignore, you will see the following screen:
Click on the Browse button. You should find the mapped drive by clicking on the 'My Computer' icon (you may need to go up a few folders to find it). The mapped drive should say 'parts on <server_ip_address>'. Double click on that drive, open the ScanIt Parts folder if you are not already in it, open the Data folder, and then double-click on the dealerdata.dbc file. This will insert the correct path into the Server path box, then click on the Ok button to start the program.
If you do not have a drive mapped to the server computer, follow these instructions to map a network drive.
If the drive is mapped, and you are sure the path is correct, but it still gives you the error (or gives an error saying 'device name in use'), it probably means that the drive is not shared on the server computer. Go to the server computer, open 'My Computer', open the 'Program Files' folder, and right click on the 'ScanIt Parts' folder, then select the Properties option. When you get to the properties window, click on the Sharing tab, make sure the 'Share this folder' radio button is marked, and that the Share Name is 'parts'. Click Ok and try to connect the client machine again.
